Documentary Subject

This is Holly Rivers. She is the assistant director of the Kellogg Institute of International Studies at Notre Dame and the program manager for undergraduate students. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Milligan College and a Master's Degree in literature from Ohio University. She taught English in the US Peace Corps in Gabon in Western Africa for two years before joining the Kellogg Institute.

This interview would work well in a documentary about teachers, specifically about teachers who have worked in a variety of environments. The interviewee in this interview has worked with in multiple different environments over the course of her career and would likely have a lot of experience to share.

Script
Two people sit on a weathered old sofa in front of a coffee table. One is bent over a laptop and a stack of papers, while the other is leaning back casually against the sofa, remote control in hand as the television flickers between channels.

TV person: -Beat-Why is this chicken being sold by a talking snake? Why would I buy chicken from a snake? Did they think about that?

Laptop person:  Well, snakes are carnivores right? I thought they ate mice though. Do they eat chicken?

TV person: -Shrugs while continuing to flip through television channels- I dunno. Why don’t you look it up?

Laptop person: -Typing- Hmm, looks like they don’t eat chicken, or at least not crunchy fast-food joint chicken. Darn, now I want chicken.

TV person: Me too. -Beat- -Gets up and goes into the kitchen- We don’t have any. You want some cereal?

Laptop person: What kind?

TV person: We have Fruit Hoops, Cocoa Stones, or Marshmallow Mateys.

Laptop person: Ooh, toss me the Marshmallow Mateys. I finished off the cereal pieces yesterday so the box is all marshmallows now.

TV person:-Beat- -Throws a cereal box-

Laptop person: -Beat- -Catches the box, begins to eat large handfuls of dried marshmallows from it. Several marshmallows fall to the side and land on the laptop and sofa.-

TV person: -Beat- -Sits back down  and continues flipping through television channels- Woah, check that out! That’s a lot of cardboard!

Laptop person: What is that, some hoarding show?

TV person: Nah, it’s one of those “Renovate your house on a budget” shows.

Laptop person: Oh neat. You know, we have a lot of old cardboard boxes, we should try that.

TV person: Oh yeah, we totally should! -Checking the clock- I have to head to work though, you want to start when I get back?

Laptop person: Yeah, sounds good. I’ll be back from class by then too. See you later.


TV person: Yeah, see you then! -Beat- -Gets up and heads out-

The beats in this script would be defined primarily by movement, especially the movement of one person getting up or sitting back down. The movement of the cereal box being thrown and caught also defines a beat. The only beat defined by something other than movement is the one defined by the opening dialogue.

Music Video Analysis

This music video for Janelle Monáe's "Q.U.E.E.N." has a combination of performative, narrative, and conceptual elements. At the beginning of the video we are given a story: that what were are viewing is a museum full of rappers from throughout history frozen in time. That story carries throughout the video when we see Monáe and co. brought to life to perform the song. The performative and conceptual elements come into play throughout the video, during dance shots and during the last minute of the video where Monáe delivers a rap verse.

The video is very styled by color, line, shape, and light. The color scheme stays consistently black and white throughout the video, with pops of color shown in outfits and parts of the scenery. Straight horizontal black and white lines are shown frequently in the background, and several backup dancers are wearing dresses with horizontal black and white stripes. The background is also defined by shapes, with large rectangular display tables shown in several shots. The combination of these rectangular shapes and the bright lighting in the scene sets the atmosphere of a futuristic museum. During the rap verse in the last minute of the video, several elements change. The rectangles and stripes seen in the background previously are replaced with two large round areas of light, and the lighting changes to a spotlight on Monáe.

This last minute of the video is the most key part. As Monáe delivers her message, she is shown center stage, and the camera slowly zooms in on her. Another key moment in the video happens towards the beginning, when a record player is shown close-up as the instrumental part of the song begins. Immediately following this, we see several shots, both close-up and far away, of the performers in the museum coming alive.

The camera stays largely static, with the performers providing most of the movement in the video, however it does pan in and out slightly in a few shots to put emphasis on the scene.

The video follows the main messages of the song and carries some similar elements and concepts, but also has a unique feeling due to the story of the futuristic museum. The way the video is presented during the rap verse gives additional emphasis on the message of the song.

My name is Cat. I am currently a junior at IUSB majoring in integrated new media studies with a concentration in graphic design. I enjoy drawing, digital art, baking, and needlework. When I graduate I hope to get a stable job in graphic design, animation, or any field in which I can be creative.
